"Sink or Swim" is a song by Ayesha Erotica. It was released on August 29th, 2015, through her main SoundCloud account "pussysugar". The original description to the song read: "its ok to be angry, i am too".[1]

It was officially re-released to all digital platforms in April, 2024.[2]

Background[]

Ayesha briefly talked about the track and explained it's background in the Bandcamp description of its sequel song “Fins”, which was released as part of her EP CUMSHOT on August 8th, 2016.[1]

"Fins is completely me, it’s about this boy named Finn that kinda broke my heart, but it’s also a sequel to my song "Sink or Swim" which was about Kevin, the situations were very similar, so i mean, hey."[1]

On October 7th, 2023, over eight years after its initial release, Ayesha reflected on "Sink or Swim" via Twitter. She explained:[1][3][4]

"i was talking to a really really cool guy, and then i over attached and got clingy, and then he ghosted me, and then i wrote that song / damn, i guess his name was kevin then. maybe kevin was right for ghosting me"

Theme[]

In the verses, Ayesha expresses that she doesn't need external hate because she already harbors enough self-hatred. She suggests that her and partner, they can "let go" and save what's left of her mental health. This could imply they are reaching a breaking point and she is seeking a way to preserve her well-being.[5]

The pre-chorus reflects the struggle of confronting personal truths. Ayesha describes how the truth still "burns" even when it is acknowledged and she tries to escape from it. She also mentions the yearning for relief from her shame. The phrase "bye reality" suggests a desire to escape from the painful realities she is currently facing.[5]

Lyrics[]

[Verse]
Now, you don't have to hate me
I do that enough myself
We can just let go
And save what's left of my mental health

[Pre-Chorus]
'Cause the truth still burns when you fan out the flame
The mind still yearns for the hole in my shame
Stop trying, you failed, your interest has sailed
(Bye reality)

[Chorus]
It's like you knew but you didn't wanna tell me you knew
It's like you did but you didn't wanna tell me it too
I don't wanna try if this won't work
I don't wanna die if it don't hurt
It's like you knew but you didn't wanna tell me you knew
It's like you did but you didn't wanna tell me it too
I don't wanna try if this won't work
I don't wanna die if it don't hurt
(Bye reality, bye reality)
(Bye reality, bye reality)
